Programme: In the first part of the course we will introduce the notions of a contact manifold and of its first prolongation, which is a bundle on the former, whose generic fibre is a Lagrangian Grassmannian. These objects will be needed for a geometric formulation of 1st and 2nd order PDEs, respectively.
Then we will show that the Lagrangian Grassmannian plays a key role in the description of some phenomena related to the characteristics of PDEs. We shall focus on the case of Monge-Ampère-type equations, since their characteristic variety is particularly simple.
We will also show that the geometry of the Lagrangian Grassmannian is rich and interesting, and it can be described in terms of Projective Differential Geometry, Conformal Geometry and Cartan Geometry. We will explain which kind of results can be achieved, in the context of non-linear PDE, making use, even combined, of these descriptions.Suggested readings and bibliography
